Project Feature: Hawthorn Heritage Home Extension

Nestled in the historic neighborhood of Hawthorn, stands a double-fronted federation-style cottage that has witnessed over a century of history. This remarkable home extension undertaken by XL Built showcases our commitment to seamlessly blending the charm of yesteryears with the convenience and aesthetics of modern living.

The Vision: A Fusion of Eras

Our challenge was to harmoniously integrate a second-story addition and a ground-floor extension into this heritage cottage. The client’s vision was clear: preserve the character of the original front while embracing contemporary living in the new extension. This involved the demolition and reconstruction of the rear ground-floor section of the house to align with the laneway fence.

The Design and Features: Bridging Past and Present

Drawing inspiration from the past, we ensured the original front retained its period-style allure. For the upper story, Architectural metal cladding was chosen to achieve a modern look that contrasts tastefully with the existing architecture. The addition of three bedrooms, complete with thoughtfully designed built-in robes, catered to the family’s needs while maintaining a sense of openness.

A key feature of the design was the incorporation of a wall of glass across the backyard. Unlike conventional stacker doors, a doorway and elegantly designed stairs leading to the existing paved area created a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The ground floor extension, constructed with recycled red brick, boasts an open-plan layout that encompasses the living area, kitchen, butler’s pantry, dining room, laundry, and a powder room. To further enhance the period-meets-modern concept, rich hardwood flooring was chosen for its warmth and durability.

Challenges and Triumphs: Navigating Time and Regulations

The century-old nature of the original cottage presented us with unique challenges. Limited access, communal laneway usage, and council restrictions demanded meticulous planning and execution. Balancing modern comfort with heritage preservation required innovative solutions and a deep understanding of both architectural eras.

A Home Reimagined: A Haven for Generations

The outcome of our endeavor is a rejuvenated heritage cottage that stands as a testament to our dedication. The renewed front facade seamlessly blends with the streetscape, paying homage to the past. Meanwhile, the new extension provides a dynamic living space for the family. Upstairs, the spacious bedrooms offer a private retreat for the children, while downstairs, the open-plan layout fosters family togetherness.

As with all our projects, functionality was a priority. A former bedroom adjoining the kitchen has been ingeniously transformed into a practical laundry and walk-in pantry. The laundry, designed as a dedicated room with a window, caters to modern needs without compromising the home’s integrity.

In summary, our restoration and extension of this Hawthorn residence is a story of juxtaposition and harmony. It’s a tribute to the rich history of the house, a celebration of modern family life, and a testament to our commitment to exceeding expectations.
