Project Feature: Mont Albert

Nestled in the leafy suburb of Mont Albert, lies one of XL Built’s most impressive achievements. Our team were enlisted to undertake a renovation and extension to a charming 100-year-old home.

This project came with its challenges and was no easy feat. The age and style of the existing home meant we had to make considered choices about the design and undertake extensive planning and permit applications – a process that only took our team four months. Construction was then completed in another three and a half months. Our team worked tirelessly to complete the build ahead of schedule so that the family could enjoy Christmas in their brand new home. We couldn’t think of a better Christmas present for our clients – handing over a carefully crafted renovation and extension of a special home from a bygone era.

The Brief

Our Mont Albert clients were a young family – a couple with teenage kids, who were desperate for more space in their heritage home. They wanted to renovate aspects of the downstairs area, which included the laundry, living and dining room, and study spaces, while building a modern second-story extension on top of the existing space.

Having undertaken a less-than-successful extension in the past, the clients were understandably wary going into this project as they didn’t want the same thing to happen again. We’re pleased to say the XL Built team were able to put their minds to ease almost immediately.

The Challenges

Given the original house was over 100 years old, special precautions had to be taken. We wanted both the renovation and extension to work seamlessly with the period style of the original home, which required additional work including sourcing custom-made cornices, skirting and architraves to match the home’s originals.

The details

We matched the exterior design of the new second story to the existing home, with a cream colour scheme and a gabled roof chosen for effect.

Inside was a different story. The interior extension was crafted to be sleek, minimal and modern. We outfitted the entire second storey with plush carpet, while each upstairs bedroom features custom built-in robes to help keep things organised and tidy.

We also had the pleasure of building a brand new, large rumpus room – a designated space for the children to watch TV and play video games. The extension also featured a new bathroom, outfitted with timber cabinetry and black tiles for a sleek, modern look.

Downstairs, we delicately modernised the space. One of our favourite features to build here was the sun-lit laundry space, which included a doorway for access to the outdoor clothes lines. We’re big believers in crafting renovations that prioritise functionality, so we were thrilled to create a laundry space that offered clever storage options, custom shelving and easy accessibility, to make doing washing a breeze.

Our team also attended to minor renovations in the living room and updated the study spaces, which will be great for both homework and working from home.
